De Baellieur Painting Loaned for Unprecedented Prague Exhibition

The Lobkowicz Collections painting A Cabinet of Curiosities (mid-17th century) by Flemish baroque artist Cornelis de Baellieur (1607–1671) will be loaned to the National Gallery in Prague for the upcoming exhibition Rembrandt & Co.: Stories Told by a Prosperous Age at Sternberg Palace.

The first comprehensive survey of Dutch art to take place in the Czech Republic in the last several decades, Rembrandt & Co., along with the scholarly catalog that will be published in conjunction with the exhibition, is the culmination of an important five-year research project on Obrázekthe National Gallery’s collection of nearly 600 Dutch paintings.

Among the paintings Cornelis de Baellieur depicts in the background of A Cabinet of Curiosities is Dutch artist Pieter de Molijn’s (1595-1661) undated landscape entitled Rest in Front of a Country House (far wall, above round canvas). This painting forms part of the National Gallery in Prague’s permanent collection and will hang adjacent to de Baellieur’s work in Rembrandt & Co.

A Cabinet of Curiosities will hang alongside more than 120 canvases from the National Gallery and other prestigious museums in the Czech Republic and abroad.

The exhibition will run from 10 February through 27 May 2012.
